Dr. Matthew Bunson

Director

Matthew E. Bunson currently serves as Executive Editor of EWTN News. For the last thirty years, he has been active in the area of Catholic Social Communications, Journalism, and teaching including writing, editing, and lecturing on a variety of topics related to the papacy, Church history, and Catholic culture, as well as regular appearances on radio and television.

The son of an Army officer, Bunson was born in Germany and grew up in Hawaii. He received a B.A. in History and two Master’s degrees in Theology from St. Joseph’s College and the Sydney College of Divinity before pursuing his Doctorate in Church History from the Graduate Theological Foundation. He also undertook graduate studies at Franciscan University of Steubenville. Bunson is one of the United States’ leading authorities on the papacy and the Church. He has appeared as a consultant to USA Today, MSNBC, CBS Radio, the BBC, and other media outlets. In 2016 Bunson joined EWTN and developed the award-winning documentary series, The Doctors of the Church, and has served as a Senior Contributor to the network ever since.

Bunson is the award-winning author or co-author of fifty-five books including The Angelic Doctor, The Life and World of St. Thomas, All Shall Be Well, and the Encyclopedias of Catholic History, the Saints, and the Roman Empire. From 1997-2016, he served as general editor of Our Sunday Visitor’s Catholic Almanac, the largest English-language compendium of facts and statistics on the Catholic Church in the United States and around the world, and from 2010-2016 was the editor of The Catholic Answer Magazine. His biography of Pope Francis (2013) – the first in the English language – won Biography of the Year from the Association of Catholic Publishers, and his Encyclopedia of U.S. Catholic History (2013) won Reference Book of the Year from the Catholic Press Association.

In addition to his position on this board, Matthew is on the faculty of Catholic Distance University, a senior fellow of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology, a member of the Catholic Advisory Board of the Museum of the Bible, and a member of the Catholic Press Association. Matthew and his wife Bonny reside in Washington, D.C. Bunson has been a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem since 2013, serves as Chancellor of the North Central Lieutenancy, and is the translator from the Italian of the book The House Was Filled with the Fragrance of the Perfume, A Spirituality for the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, by Fernando Cardinal Filoni, the Order’s Grand Master.
