Saint John XXIII Foundation Welcomes New Directors to Board

Addition of seven new directors brings total board membership to 13

WASHINGTON, DC — Joseph Starshak, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Saint John XXIII Foundation, is happy to announce the addition of seven new Directors.  Four Directors were elected during a Special Meeting of the Board held in March of 2023, and the remaining three were elected during the Spring Meeting of the Board held in Chicago on 8 June.

The Saint John XXIII Foundation is governed by its Board.  Each Director is nominated by a current Director and thereafter elected by the entire Board. The candidates undergo a review by the Nominations Committee, which considers the quality and qualifications of the candidates and the current and future needs of the Foundation.  Board members staff various committees that assist the Board in its governing role.  Committees include Finance and Investment, Advancement, Nominations, Audit, and Executive.

With the addition of these seven new Directors, the Board has more-than doubled in size since the creation of the Foundation with six initial Directors in August of 2022, bringing the total number now to 13.

His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services, USA, and President of the Saint John XXIII Foundation, reflecting on the additional new members, said: “The new Directors bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience and I am overjoyed that they have decided to put their expertise at the service of the Saint John XXIII Foundation.  As the Foundation labors to fulfill its mission of nourishing the faith of the men and women of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, I am grateful that the Directors have accepted the call to serve those who serve.”

The following are the new Directors of the Saint John XXIII Foundation:

Matthew E. Bunson

Matthew E. Bunson, Ph.D., currently serves as Vice President and Editorial Director of EWTN News. For the last thirty years, he has been active in Catholic social communications, journalism, and teaching including writing, editing, and lecturing on a variety of topics related to the papacy, church history, and Catholic culture, as well as regular appearances on radio and television. In addition to his position on this Board, Dr. Bunson is on the faculty of Catholic Distance University, a senior fellow of the Saint Paul Center for Biblical Theology, a member of the Catholic Advisory Board of the Museum of the Bible, and a member of the Catholic Media Association.  Matthew and his wife Bonny reside in Washington, D.C. Dr. Bunson has been a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem since 2013 and serves as Chancellor of the North Central Lieutenancy.  Dr. Bunson is the translator from the Italian of the book The House Was Filled with the Fragrance of the Perfume, A Spirituality for the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, by Fernando Cardinal Filoni, the Order’s Grand Master.

Gregory Miller

Gregory Miller, Ph.D., is the CEO of CrossCom and an Adjunct Professor at Harvard University.  For the past two decades, Dr. Miller has led CrossCom in the highly competitive field of network and data system design, installation, and maintenance. Dr. Miller is a 3rd generation member of the United States Armed Forces and the American Legion. He served honorably in the United States Air Force, 552nd Airborne Warning and Control Systems Division. A scholar for life, Dr. Miller is now completing a Master’s Degree in Theology from the University of Notre Dame and hopes to apply this knowledge to his ministry.  In addition to serving on this board, he is a member of the Harvard Business School Club of Chicago, Academy of Management, Southern Management Association, CFA Institute, and the Strategic Management Society. Dr. Miller lives in Chicago with his wife Catie.  The Millers are Platinum Patrons of the Saint John XXIII Foundation and have created the Faith to Forces Endowed Fund to support the mission of the Foundation.

Anita M. Raines

Colonel Anita M. Raines, USA (Ret.), currently serves as the Director of Organic Industrial Base Strategy in the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (Material Readiness), Office of the Secretary of Defense. Prior to this assignment, Col. Raines served on the Headquarters, Department of the Army team from 2016-2023 where she served as the Chief of the Sustainment Maintenance Division in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Army G4, and as the Senior Industrial Base Analyst, Industrial Base Directorate, Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army (Sustainment). In addition to serving on this board, Col. Raines is a Dame Commander with Star of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, where she serves as President of the Military Section in the Middle Atlantic Lieutenancy.  Col. Raines is a Trustee of Saint Edmund’s Retreat on Enders Island, CT. Anita and her husband Jay reside in Carlisle, PA.

Breda Shelton

Breda Shelton is a retired Texas Catholic School educator, investor, and philanthropist who makes her home in Arlington, TX. Through her service to several Catholic institutions, Ms. Shelton continues the work that she began with her late husband, George P. Shelton III, almost two decades ago.  In addition to the Foundation, Ms. Shelton serves on the Board of Directors of the Gingrich Foundation and Catholic Charities Fort Worth.  Ms. Shelton is a Bronze Patron of the Saint John XXIII Foundation.

James Allen

James W. Allen, MD, MPH, is a retired Navy physician, awarded pilot, and business owner. Dr. Allen specialized in the care of the industrial workforce at the Navy’s shipyards and aviation repair stations, and served as manager of a project that installed medical computer systems in the shipyards and directed the transition to productivity measures for occupational health services. After 30 years of service in the Navy Medical Corps, Dr. Allen retired as a captain in 2006. He then worked with the U.S. Public Health Service providing toxicology and health services to federal agencies for eight years before his final retirement in 2014. Following his retirement Dr. Allen has focused on his passion for aviation while caring for his family’s legacy. Dr. Allen is a Platinum Patron of the Foundation and the creator of the James and Carol S. Allen Endowed Co-Sponsored Seminarian Scholarship.

William F. Cuddy

Monsignor William F. Cuddy is a priest of the Archdiocese of Boston and retired Catholic Navy Chaplain.  Monsignor retired at the rank of captain after 37 honorable years of service. In his retirement, Msgr. Cuddy has continued to minister to the forces in Massachusetts, splitting the past decade as a contract chaplain between Bedford and the Hanscom Air Force Base, where he currently provides contracted ministerial services.  Msgr. Cuddy has generously supported the Co-Sponsored Seminarian Program of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), and looks forward to working with his fellow chaplains, both active and retired, to continue to grow the support for seminarians who will serve as future chaplains.

Kathleen Murphy

Kathleen Murphy, after serving as President of Fidelity Personal Investing for 13 years, is now a Senior Adviser to the CEO of Fidelity Investments. She is a Board member at Snyk Technologies and an Advisory Board member at FliptRX.  Under her leadership, Personal Investing, Fidelity’s largest area of business, enjoyed extraordinary growth and expansion (from approximately $850 billion to $ 4.4 trillion in client assets over her tenure). She led a significant digital transformation for over 25,000 employees that propelled accelerated growth and productivity. In addition to her new role on this board, Ms. Murphy is the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Football Foundation and sits on the Board of Directors of the Markle Foundation. She currently lives in South Carolina with her husband George Hornyak and son Jack. Ms. Murphy is now pursuing a Master’s Degree in Theology from the University of Notre Dame.
